Sir Abed honoured
Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder and chairperson of Brac, has been awarded the Central European University Open Society Prize 2013 for his outstanding contributions to the principles of open society, and leadership and unwavering commitment to humanitarian aid and development.
He will receive the prize in Budapest of Hungary on 13th June next year at the annual commencement ceremony of Central European University (CEU), where he will deliver the commencement address on legal empowerment of the poor, said a release yesterday.
Based in Bangladesh, Brac has been tackling poverty and empowering the poor in 10 other countries of Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. In the span of four decades, it has grown to become the largest development organisation in the world in terms of the scale and diversity of its interventions.
Among the former recipients of the CEU Open Society Prize are Sir Karl Popper (1994), Václav Havel (1999), Ricardo Lagos (2006), Carla Del Ponte (2007), Kofi Annan (2008), Martii Ahtisaari (2009), Louise Arbour (2010), late Richard C Holbrooke and Javier Solana jointly (2011), and Aryeh Neier (2012).
Founded in 1991, the CEU is a significant central European convener on contemporary economic, social, and political issues. It is a new model for international education in Europe and supports building open and democratic societies that respect human rights.
