All 13 valid for mayoral race
The Election Commission gave the nod to all 13 candidates to contest for mayor in the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) polls slated for December 20.
Out of 357 candidates, 339 were given the go-ahead to contest for councillor posts, said Monirul Islam, zonal election officer of Rangpur, on Thursday night.
All the 92 candidates, who earlier submitted nomination papers, would vie for women's reserved councillor posts, Monirul, also returning officer of RCC election, added.
The three mayoral aspirants from Jatiya Party are Moshiur Rahman Ranga, presidium member of Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad), AKM Abdur Rauf Manik, former organising secretary of JP central committee and Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, member secretary of Jatiya Party Rangpur district unit.
The other mayoral aspirants from Awami League are Firoz Kabir Chowdhury Gunjan, former general secretary of Rangpur Sadar upazila unit of AL, Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, member of advisory committee of Rangpur district unit AL and Shafiar Rafman Shafi, president of AL Rangpur city unit.
Other aspirants include independent candidates Mehedy Hasan and Ali Haydar Dulu, Kayser Zaman Babla, former president of Rangpur municipality unit BNP.
The last day for withdrawal of candidacy is November 29.
