Selected engravings by Goya at Bengal Gallery
Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts, the Spanish Embassy in Bangladesh and the Inditex Chair of Spanish Language and Culture, University of Dhaka, have jointly organised an exhibition of selected engravings by master Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco Goya [from the collection of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes of San Fernando].
The two week long exhibition opens today at 6pm. The exhibition will remain open until October 22 [daily, from 12 pm to 8 pm]
Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir will inaugurate the exhibition and with it, the newly renovated premises of Bengal Gallery in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Mijarul Quayes, secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be present as special guest. Luis Tejada Chacon, the Spanish Ambassador to Bangladesh, will be the guest of honour at the inauguration. Antonio Abril, general counsel of Inditex, and Abul Khair, chairman of Bengal Foundation, will also speak at the opening of the exhibition.
Spanish romantic artist Goya was regarded both as the last of the old masters and the first of the moderns. His engravings reveal a different facet of his personality -- more critical and free -- and have established him as one of the best engravers of all time.
About 84 artworks will be on display at the exhibition. The collection includes works ranging from his first etchings, through which he mastered this difficult technique while interpreting Velazquez, to pieces from his four great original series: “Los Caprichos”, which depicts the vices of Spanish society using metaphors rife with fantasy; “Los Desastres de la Guerra”, which demonstrates the uselessness of violence; “La Tauromaquia”, a refuge from his disappointment with an irrational society; and “Los Disparates”, depicting his legacy of surrealist freedom.
On the occasion of the exhibition, Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts organised a press conference at Bengal Café in Dhanmondi yesterday. Spanish Ambassador Luis Tejada Chacon; Juan Bordes, member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes of San Fernando; Amparo Porta, coordinator of Inditex Chair of Spanish Language and Culture, University of Dhaka; Luva Nahid Chowdhury, director general of Bengal Foundation; Subir Chowdhury, director of Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts; and Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury, senior coordinator of Bengal Foundation, spoke on the occasion.
