Over 1,000 trucks were left stranded at different entry points of Sylhet city since yesterday morning after truckers of Sylhet Zila Truck Sramik Union enforced a 48-hour strike over a five-point demand.
The demands include unconditional release of two of their arrested fellow truckers, establishment of a truck terminal in Sylhet and stopping illegal toll collection from trucks on different roads by highway police and in the name of Companiganj Truck Malik Samity.
Truckers Abdul Batir Kabir and Abdul Haque Ripon were arrested over the death of a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist, Alfu Ahmed, in a mob beating in the city's Keane Bridge on March 25.
Sylhet Zila Truck Sramik Union President Abu Sarker said, “We had repeatedly informed the authorities concerned about all of our just demands. Since no step was taken in this regard, we were compelled to press the strike.”
