Clashes mark UP polls in Noakhali
Ten people including three policemen and two Ansar members were injured in clashes between law enforcers and locals while ballot box looting, attempt to seize polling centres, suspension of polls at two centres marked elections in several centers during election to nine union parishads (UP) of Chatkhil upazila yesterday.
Local lawmaker barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon at a press conference demanded re-election in Khilpara and Pachgao UPs.
It was alleged that supporters of Khilpara UP chairman candidate Alamgir Hossain seized ballot papers at Khilpara High School, Nahar Khil Government Primary School and Sreeram Government Primary School polling centres and cast votes in his favour.
Rival candidate Peyar Ahmed announced election boycott in presence of journalists at around 11:00am. He submitted a written report to the returning officer asking for re-election at seven centres.
Voting was stopped at Afsar Khil Forkania Madrasa and Abu Torab Nagar Government Primary School polling centres in Pachgao unions following the allegation of ballot box looting and attempt to seize the two polling centres.
At this time supporters of chairman candidate Mostafa Khan allegedly snatched two ballot boxes, which led to the clash between them and supporters of rival candidate Bazlul Karim Babul.
Police fired five rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. Five people were injured in the clash between the police and locals.
