Guarantors asked to produce Adflame directors in court
A Dhaka court yesterday asked the guarantors to produce two of Adflame Pharmaceutical's directors and one of its managers, charged with adulteration of paracetamol syrup 17 years ago, before it on January 12, 2010.
Judge Golam Mortuza Majumder of the Drug Court passed the order after New Market police submitted reports on execution of summons issued earlier about the three accused.
The guarantors are Abul Hasnat of Khilgaon Chowdhurypara area and advocate Khondaker Bashir Ahmed.
The three accused are directors of Adflame, Dr Helena Pasha and Azfar Pasha, and its manager Mizanur Rahman.
In the reports placed before the court, Assistant Sub Inspector of New Market Police Station Afsar Uddin said they had earlier received summons issued from the court and went to the Elephant Road residence of the accused to inform about the summons.
But they found that the accused had earlier sold the land to a company and shifted their office from there. So, they failed to inform them about the court orders.
After receipt of police report, Special Public Prosecutor Selim Jahangir submitted a petition to the court for issuance of summons upon the guarantors asking them to produce their clients before it in the next hearing of the case.
In 1992, the Directorate of Drug Administration filed the case against Adflame Pharmaceutical for producing paracetamol syrup with a brand name 'Flammodol' that was tested positive for the deadly chemical diethylene glycol.
The proceedings were however brought to a stop for 13 years when the High Court issued a temporary stay order, which was never challenged. Although two years ago, the HC vacated the stay, the drug court was unaware of the order until The Daily Star during its recent investigation revealed it.
Two other accused in the Adflame case, Nrigendra Nath Bala and Md Noman, have also been absconding.
