Space shuttle Atlantis set for launch
The space shuttle Atlantis and its six astronauts lift off yesterday on a mission to bring vital supplies and spare parts to the nearly-completed Inter-national Space Station (ISS).
Liftoff is set for 2:28 pm (1928 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center near Florida's Cape Canaveral, Nasa said.
Atlantis is carrying some 27,000 pounds (12,300 kilos) of gyroscopes, ammonia tanks and other essential equipment. With the shuttle program poised to retire, the orbiting ISS needs to stock up on vital items, officials said.
