Extortionists kill trader

Thief beaten to death

Extortionists shot dead a furniture shop-owner in Bhashantek in the city while a mob beat a thief to death at Aminbazar on the outskirts of the capital yesterday.
In Savar, the beheaded body of an expatriate was found at Hemayetpur.
A gang of six armed extortionists shot nine bullets into Mohammad Waliullah, 50, in front of his shop Liton Furniture at Bhashantek Baganbari at around 1:30pm.
The victim's son Liton told The Daily Star that the local criminals killed his father on refusal to pay Tk 50,000 extortion. His father filed a general diary with Kafrul Police Station three months back in this regard. But criminals repeatedly threatened him after filing of the GD and asked to pay Tk 5 lakh.
Mamunur Rashid, a witness and carpenter of the shop, said criminals fled the scene after the incident.
"Though police and Rab strengthened their vigilance in the area, they could not save my father," Liton said.
In Amin Bazar, locals beat to death Bachchu, 22, when he was fleeing after stealing from Din Islam's house of Shibpur village under Savar Police Station.
Bachchu hails from Rajbari district.
He was chased and caught when he jumped into the river Turag at around 10:00am, Savar police said.
Meanwhile, body of Bahrain expatriate Mohammad Rafiq, 22, was found beheaded in Jhauchar village of Savar at around 9:00am yesterday.
Rafiq's father Fazlu Miah said his son went out of their house around 10:30pm on Thursday and did not come back.
He, however, could not ascertain the reason behind the killing.
Savar police said none was arrested in connection with the murder.
