Newly-wed woman burnt to death for ‘dowry’
A 20-year-old newly married woman has been burnt to death allegedly by her husband for dowry in Raipur upazila of Narsingdi.
Subarna Akter, a second year student at Narsingdi Government College, got married to Elias Miah of Nagarkanda village in the upazila only 15 days ago, according to family sources.
The couple Saturday afternoon went to the house of Subarna’s parents where Elias demanded money from his father-in-law, our Narsingdi correspondent reports quoting the sources.
At about 7:30pm Saturday, Elias argued with Subarna over the issue. As he was refused the money, Elias set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her body, the family sources said.
The family rushed the woman to Narsingdi General Hospital from where she was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Subarna succumbed to her injuries around 8:00am today.
She had suffered 90 percent burns, said doctors at the DMCH.
Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station, said Elias fled after the incident.
Subarna’s family is preparing a case in this connection.
