Music against Extremism
With the theme “Music against extremism,” a three-day (March 30-April 1) Music Festival 2014 concluded at the open premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). BSA, together with Bangladesh Sangeet Sangathan Samannay Parishad, arranged the festival -- where a number of music troupes, schools and solo artistes from across the country performed solo and choral songs, along with dances. The festival exclusively featured presentation of patriotic songs, gonosangeet, folk songs, poncho-kobi'r gaan and instrumental recitals.
The concluding day's (April 1) festival began with a dotara recital by the artistes of Bangladesh Dotara Shilpi Parishad. Artistes of the folk music troupe Banshuria performed two songs -- “Janitey Chai Doyal Tomar” and “Ei Prithibi Jemon Achhey” – originally composed by mystic bard Bijoy Sarkar. Singers of Jagoron Sangskriti Chorcha O Gobeshona Kendra presented two spirited songs, “Aaj Joto Juddhabaj” and “Phul Khelbar Din Noy Auddo.”
Noted Tagore singer Sadi Mohammad first performed a patriotic song, “Aaji Bangladesh-er Hridoy Hotey”, and later led his troupe Rabirag in rendering Tagore's Swadesh Parjaya songs -- “Ebar Tor Mora Gangey” and “Ami Marer Sagar Pari Debo.”
Child artistes of Dharmarajik Lalitakala Academy danced to two folk songs while artistes of Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad performed two patriotic songs --“Eki Oporup Roop-e Ma Tomaye” and “O Bhai Khati Sonar Cheye Khati” along with the marching song “Chol Chol Chol” – composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Artistes of Baitalik Sangeetangan also performed Tagore's Swadesh Parjaya songs -- “Phirey Chol Matir Taan-e,” “Orey Orey Orey Amar Mon Metechhey” and “Je Tomaye Chharey Chharuk.” Singers of Arkum Shah Shilpigoshthi of Sylhet performed the bard's compositions while artistes of Padatik Sangeet Sangsad performed a patriotic song, “Dhonno Ami Jonmecchi,” a Tagore song “O Alor Pothojatri” and a spirited Nazrul Sangeet “Durgam Giri Kantar Moru” at the event.
Artistes of Purbita performed three gonosangeet numbers, “Shokto Haat-e Dhor Potaka,” “Bishwe Aaj Jongibad” and “Purba Digantey Surja Uthechhe” at the festival.
A number of solo singers with artistes of various troupes, including Dolonchapa Lalitkala Academy and Geetanjali, performed at the festival. Singers of Gao Geram Shilpi-goshthi performed “Baroshia Gaan” at the programme. Artistes of Dhol Badok Association captivated the crowd with their pulsating beats.
