Modi to stake claim to form India government
India's Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi is due to meet President Pranab Mukherjee and stake his claim to form the new government after his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a landslide election victory.
The BJP's 282 MPs have elected Modi as their leader at a party meeting today, according to Indian news agencies.
Modi has been holding a series of meetings to finalise his cabinet.
The BJP won a landslide majority in parliament and will be able to govern without coalition partners.
The date for Modi's swearing in as the prime minister has still not been announced, although reports say that it could happen at the weekend.
Narendra Modi secured the most decisive election victory in India in three decades, campaigning on promises to revive the economy.
The Congress party finished with just 44 of the 543 seats and under 20 percent of the vote in what was its worst ever performance.
According to local news agencies, Modi has attended meetings with his party and alliance partners who are expected to choose him as their leader.
He will then return to Gujarat for a public meeting in Ahmedabad city.
