Missing driver suspected as mastermind
Police yesterday launched an investigation into the killing of photojournalist Aftab Ahmed, suspecting the victim's missing driver as the mastermind.
"In the preliminary investigation, it appears that the missing driver has killed Aftab Ahmed for his money," said Kreepa Shindhu Bala, officer-in-charge, Rampura Police Station.
The driver, Kabir, went absconding after the killing. Police are yet to track him down.
The deceased's son, Monoar Ahmed Sagor, however, filed a case with Rampura Police Station last evening accusing some unnamed people.
The law enforcers detained the victim's house help Nasima Begum and former driver Oli for interrogation.
On Wednesday morning, police recovered the body of the Ekushey Padak winning photographer from his house in the capital's Rampura. He had been gagged and strangled.
Speaking to reporters at the media centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Joint Commissioner of Detective Branch Monirul Islam said the address given by Kabir was false.
Family members said the deceased saved Tk 1.5 lakh for a trip to India for treatment. He had the whole amount or some portion with him, which the driver took away after the killing.
He was buried at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard after two namaj-e-janazas--one at his residence and the other at Jatiya Press Club.
Aftab, 79, joined as a photographer of the daily Ittefaq in 1962 and captured some images of the 1971 Liberation War and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He won Ekushey Padak in 2006, fiver years after his retirement from the daily in 2001.
