This Friday, a part of Cuppa Coffee Lounge will become an open market place where you can shop for the newest products on offer.

FAIHAM EBNA SHARIF PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

With the success of the Opium Wars, the East India Company followed by other sterling companies, set up tea business in the colonies. Today, tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world, after water.

Mass migration of labour and social division were among the key factors to introduce an 'enclave economy' within the tea estates, which still exist in the post-colonial years. British management system, credit and auction facilities in the pre-and post-production period, estate rules along with its own rituals, and a quasi-trade union which best serves the interests of the owners — all are still present in the 162 tea gardens in Bangladesh, which employ approximately half a million permanent, contractual and seasonal labourers.

The ghost of the centuries-old feudal structure is still evident in these so-called estates as a form of master-slave relation. With Tk 85 a day (just over US$ 1) or less, the workers have little access to education, accommodation, healthcare, sanitation, workplace safety. Gender discrimination is also rampant. All such exploitation complements a theoretical framework that produces the cheapest labour in the global economy.

History of colonialism in Bangladesh chronicles an extensive account of plantation economies of cotton, indigo, rubber, sugar, tea, and other crops like tobacco. The exploitative and abusive nature of labour underpinning the whole practice and the futility of growing indigo and sugar pushed the British colonialists to establish tea production in the Indian subcontinent.

In this photography exhibition Faiham Ebna Sharif's camera bears witness to the lives and struggles of the workers in the plantations.

Developing your Emotional Intelligence can help you become more successful in personal, professional and academic life, as it can help to understand your strengths and weaknesses, identify the needs and desires of others, and develop strong interpersonal relationships with others at work and at schools.

To help you develop this important soft skill, Mind Mechanics is going to conduct its next workshop on Emotional Intelligence on 20 January. 

Upon completion of the workshop you will get self-assessment result of how good you are at understanding your own emotions and those of others. Develop an action plan to improve in these areas in order to make yourself more employable and effective at workplace and at school.
