'Our personality makes us beautiful”
Focusing on beauty anxiety, this year at Dove's campaign, we were fortunate enough to find amongst ourselves, the multitalented Bipasha Hayat. Most of us know her as an excellent actress but she is also a painter and a brilliant screenwriter.
At the very beginning of her speech, the wordsmith wonderfully laid down her thoughts about age; she said “The age of my physical being is a bit more than 45 years. Whereas the age of my mind is still stuck at 15, and if I had to give my soul a number, it would be infinite.”
On a lighter note when asked to reveal the ages of the speakers, corresponding with the topic of the day, with a jubilant smile on her face, the actress told us that her age was the same as that of our beloved country and that it was her great pride that she grew up with her motherland.
She talked about how one's confidence mostly depends on their upbringing. “I was brought up by my parents who encouraged me to paint, to act and to write. Their infectious way of enjoying life gave me confidence and I learnt how to focus on things that made me happy.”
“My age has never made me anxious. I believe that every age has a different kind of beauty. Sometimes my mother's zeal for life makes me feel as if she was younger than me.”
She explained how since the first source of any kind of education is family, our beliefs and values stem from interactions with our parents and siblings. These values and beliefs impact on how we think and behave. It gives us strength and confidence to believe that we are beautiful the way we are.
“Beauty is not something external, it's rather the experiences and the philosophy attained from those experiences that defines our beauty. What make us beautiful are our thoughts, our perspectives and the knowledge that we gain to understand the world.” She said.
As a media personality, when asked if she felt pressured to constantly look younger than her age in order to get the lead roles, she said, “I don't do roles which portray me as younger than my actual age because acting is an art of believing. I don't want to misguide my viewers.”
In today's world, the media is responsible in promoting stereotypical definitions of beauty which has had alarming influences on the young generation. By trying to emulate their role models of a certain age bracket and lean physique, they are refraining from self-acceptance. “This lack of self-acceptance is the root cause of anxiety that comes with ageing.”
“Even though we are not born with such low impressions of ourselves, we tend to go through age related anxieties due to our culture and society. I think that we shouldn't let this inferiority complex define who we are; instead we should realise that we are beautiful at every age.”
“Change thyself and only then can you eradicate such fallacious definitions of beauty,” she powerfully concluded.
