Buy a Jamdani sari this Eid
It seems that the whole country is on a shopping spree. The numerous malls of Dhaka are overflowing with people, tireless even in the month of Ramadan. After all, Eid is just around the corner.
A very unique and a promising market -- something that will undoubtedly be worth checking out -- is the Jamdani fair that is currently going on at the premises of Bangladesh National Museum in Shahbagh.
The exhibition started on 1 July and will run till 10 July, 2015. It has been jointly organised by Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and Bangladesh National Museum.
Jamdani, being a heritage heirloom of our country, has rightfully made its place at the museum's premises. The exhibition is hosting a collection of stalls of Jamdani houses, which have come to Dhaka from the Jamdani villages to participate.
A sari is, we may say, one of the most elegant outfits a woman can adorn herself with. And if the sari is Jamdani, then the elegance is multiplied manifold. Moreover, if you buy a Jamdani sari, you are in fact supporting this craft that has been the pride of Bengal for centuries.
With the upcoming Eid, the stall owners have said that they are looking forward to a large number of customers visiting the exhibition. A walk down the aisle, with a series of stalls on both sides, shows price tags of Tk 3500, Tk 5000, Tk 12000 and Tk 30000 and so on.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition. Special guests were Md. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Industries Secretary and Mirza Azam, State Minister for Textiles and Jute. Ahmed Hossain Khan, Chairman, BSCIC and Fayzul Latif Chowdhury, Director General, Bangladesh National Museum were also present at the occasion.
