The loss of agricultural biodiversity
Crop monoculture or the common practice of mass production of genetically similar crops/plants over large agronomic areas for years has significant negative impacts on agricultural biodiversity around the globe. Modern industrial agriculture practices such as the extensive use of agro-chemicals like synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, and artificial plant hormones and overuse of irrigation water have cumulative impacts on agricultural biodiversity. A large number of locally adapted cultivars, germplasms, seed lines and crop varieties have been lost in an epic proportion. It is important for all nations to combat these factors that contribute to the loss of agricultural biodiversity and threaten food security.
