Legal notice sent to Tarique for calling Mujib 'Pakbandhu'
A Supreme Court lawyer today sent a legal notice to BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman asking him to apologise unconditionally to the nation for calling Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a “Pakbandhu (friend of Pakistan).
Advocate Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi sent the notice saying that Tarique reportedly told at a BNP meeting in London that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a friend of Pakistan and termed Bangabandhu as the “killer of the liberation-seeking people”.
Tarique Rahman also said Mujib, being a Pakistani citizen, took oath as the president of Bangladesh.
In the legal notice, Mehedi asked Tarique to withdraw the “unconstitutional non-political, undemocratic and improper statements” within seven days.
Otherwise, a criminal case will file against him, the SC lawyer said.
The lawyer sent the notice to BNP’s Nayapaltan central office of and Tarique’s mother Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence by post.
On September 29, Tarique at the discussion held at York Hall in East London termed Sheikh Mujib a “Pakbandhu”.
“Sheikh Mujibur Rahman cannot be the Father of the Nation. He returned to the country with a Pakistani passport. Someone who accepts Pakistani passport even after Bangladesh's independence is a citizen of that country in the eyes of the law,” Tarique said.
"One day it will have to be explained how a Pakistani citizen became a president or prime minister of Bangladesh," the BNP leader warned.
