Professor Dr. Nico Schrijver, Chair of International Law and Academic Director of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden University, Netherlands spoke on the theme of the lecture while eminent jurist Dr. Kamal Hossain was present as a discussant. Professor Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, Chairman, Department of Law moderated the session which was followed by comments and questions from faculties and students and ended with a note of gratitude by Professor Dr. Rahmat Ullah, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka.
Dr. Nico highlighted the role of International Law in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The main theme of SDG is that current generation can achieve everything without compromising the same for the future generations and it is necessarily linked with the concept of inter-generational equity. He also emphasised on the environmental and economic aspects of the SDGs. While underpinning the role of international community, he stressed on the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities that aims to ensure environmental accountability particularly by developed countries. While demarcating state obligations in ensuring environmental protection and sustainable development, the influence of global politics plays significant role that cannot be avoided wholly, he added.
Dr. Kamal Hossain emphasised on the role of good governance in ensuring the achievement of SDGs. As there is no proper definition of ‘good governance’, he particularly gave importance to the concept of ‘bad governance’. According to Dr. Kamal, we do know what bad governance is and staying away from all of those activities is called ‘good governance’.
