Kushtia JSD leader shot dead
A Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Ahmedpur village in Mirpur upazila of the district on Monday.
The dead, Ismail Hossain Panjer, 55 was vice-president of Mirpur upazila unit of JSD.
Police quoted witness as saying that a gang of four sprayed bullets on Panjer when he along with two others was sitting at a tea stall at the village around 6:00am. Panjer died instantly.
One Safi Mondol, 40, of the village received bullet wounds during the attack. He is undergoing treatment at Kushtia Medical College Hospital.
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, also JSD chief, visited the house of the slain JSD leader in the afternoon.
Sahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said Panjer was a regional leader of outlawed Gono Bahini and involved in criminal activities.
Panjer was arrested twice-February 12, 2009 and September 1, 2011--with arms and ammunition. Later, he was granted bail in both cases.
Golam Mohsin, president of JSD Kushtia district unit, claimed that Panjer had no link with Gono Bahini.
Panjer's son Abdullah Al Mamun Mitul filed a murder case with Mirpur Police Station yesterday afternoon.
