Khilgaon robbery victims stalked for a week, says ‘mastermind’
The muggers involved in the murder of a man and snatching away of Tk 38 lakh in Khilgaon of Dhaka were stalking the victims for a week before carrying out the crime.
The information was revealed today by police at a press conference hours after the “mastermind” of the mugging was arrested from the capital along with Tk 4 lakh of the looted money.
On September 4, criminals shot dead Sharif Hossain Simon, 30, and wounded his father Israil Hossain, 58, owner of Universal Money Exchange at Motijheel, and snatched away money worth Tk 38 lakh from in front of their home in Khilgaon.
The arrestee, Kazi Sirajul Islam, 40, was the mastermind of the mugging, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch of Police, said at the briefing. “He has confessed to his involvement with the incident during primary interrogation.”
“The victims were followed for about a week before the incident took place,” the official said. “They had information that the foreign currency traders used to take money home from their Motijheel office every Thursday.”
However, it was not clear as to how the muggers obtained this information. Monirul Islam said that further probe will be carried out on whether any of the employees from the victims’ office were involved with the incident.
“Five people took part in the mugging. One Shahin fired the first shot,” he said.
The mugged money was distributed among the robbers at Sirajul’s house on the day of the incident, he added. “The Tk 4 lakh seized from Sirajul was a portion of the stolen money.”
A case has already been filed with the Khilgaon Police Station and the station’s officer-in-charge, Sirajul Islam, withdrawn for his negligence over the sensational murder and mugging incident.
