Justice denied: Defence
Justice was denied by penalising fugitive BNP leader MA Zahid Hossain Khokon with death for 1971 war crimes, said the government-appointed defence today after the verdict.
“I am not happy with the verdict. It did not establish justice. My client was not involved in any war crime activities and the allegations against him were false and baseless”, said Abdur Sukkur Khan, Khokon Razakar’s defence counsel.
Talking to reporters at the court premises, prosecutor Sabina Yasmin Munni said Khokon Razakar will not be entitled to appeal against the judgement if he does not surrender by 30 days (from today).
“In that case, he may file an application to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking permission to appeal,” Sukkur Khan said.
Khokon Razakar, vice-president of Nagarkanda unit BNP and a Jamaat-e-Islami campaigner before that, went into hiding in 2011 after he took oath as a mayor following the municipality elections held in that year.
Khokon Razakar committed war crimes on a solo basis and sometimes along with the Pakistani army during 1971, the tribunal said in its verdict that handed the war criminal death on six charges.
The tribunal found him guilty in 10 charges out of 11. Death penalty was given in six charges. Khokon has been acquitted of one charge as it could not be proved.
