JUST closed after BCL man killing
Jessore University of Science and Technology has been closed for an indefinite period following the killing of a BCL activist by his party rivals.
The university authorities asked the male students to vacate their residential halls by 9:00pm today and female students by 9:00am tomorrow.
The university authorities in an emergency meeting with Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sattar took the decisions, Hayat Uzzaman, Public Relations Officer of the university, said.
The authorities also suspended studentship of Shubrata Biswas, JUST president of Bangladesh Chhatra League, and its general secretary Shamim Hassan, he added.
Two other BCL leaders -- Tanvir Faisal and Abdul Aziz -- have also been suspended.
Hayat said a body headed by Dr Iqbal Kabir Zahid of Microbiology has been formed to investigate the matter.
After the meeting, the VC said necessary legal measures would be taken on the basis of the probe body findings.
Earlier, a BCL activist was stabbed to death allegedly by his rivals in the student body this afternoon on the university campus over an intra-party conflict.
Naimul Islam Riad, 24, was an environmental science student, reports a correspondent from Jessore.
Riad came under attack when he along with his roommate Jelal Hossain Jewel was standing in front of the university’s entrance, said Ratul (full name not known), a friend of Riad and also a student of the university.
He added that nine outsiders on three motorcycles arrived there and stabbed Riad indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Riad was whisked off to Jessore Medical College and Hospital where NK Alam, a doctor of the hospital, declared him dead.
Jewel also sustained minor injuries during the attack.
The attack might be a sequel to an altercation at an iftar programme yesterday between two activists who were followers of the university's BCL Secretary Shamim Hasan and activist Sanjay Banerjee.
Shamim and Sanjay had rivalry over the BCL unit committee election held two months back as Sanjay did not get any party position.
Riad was a follower of Sanjay.
Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotwali Police Station, said the incident took place over a conflict between two rival groups in the BCL.
