Jamuna erosion makes 50 families homeless
Erosion by the River Jamuna took an alarming turn in the last few days, rendering over 50 families at three villages in Sariakandi upazila homeless.
The affected villages are Dalirkandi, Nijkornipara and Talukdarpara in the upazila, said local Water Development Board (WDB) sources.
The erosion victims are passing their days without drinking water and foods, said Gaziul Haque, chairman of Kutubpur union parishad.
During a visit to Nijkornibari village in the union on Friday, this correspondent found many villagers leaving their homesteads for safer places, fearing further onslaught by the river.
Locals said the river water has been rising abnormally for the last few days, devouring more than 50 houses and 60 acres of cropland.
The river washed away our homesteads and farmlands during the period, said Ansar Ali, Amirul Islam, Naya Mia, Mohoshin Ali, Barik Mia, Abdul Mannan and Anwara Begum of Nijkornibari village.
They also urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to control the erosion in the area.
Contacted, the chairman of Shariakandi upazila parishad said he had already informed the WDB official about the matter.
Executive Engineer of Bogra district WDB office Nurul Islam said we wrote to the higher authorities for fund to check the erosion but no response yet to come.
