Influential quarters barrier to freeing footpaths: Ashraf
LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam today said in parliament that it was not possible to evict illegal occupiers from the capital’s footpaths due to their patronisation by influential quarters and lack of interest of law enforcement agencies.
Replying to lawmakers’ queries, he said Dhaka south and north city corporations have been trying relentlessly to free footpaths from illegal grabbers in their respective areas.
In a scripted reply, the minister said the two city corporations are also conducting mobile courts on a regular basis to drive out illegal occupants from footpaths so that pedestrians can move without any obstructions.
“But illegal grabbers again occupy the footpaths soon after their eviction. Desired result could not be achieved in spite of repeated eviction operation,” said Ashraf, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League.
He added that in spite of city corporations’ sincerity it was not possible to evict illegal grabbers completely from footpaths due to law enforcement agencies’ lack of sincerity and patronisation by influential quarters.
The minister however hoped that it would be possible to completely free footpaths from illegal grabbers soon through coordinated efforts.
State Minister for LGRD Moshiur Rahman Ranga gave reply on behalf of the LGRD minister due to his absence in today’s parliament sitting.
