India, Pakistan trade gunfire in Jammu and Kashmir
India and Pakistan traded “heavy gunfire” along the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir this morning.
Both sides have blamed each other for “unprovoked and heavy firing” violating the 2003 LoC ceasefire accord “for the 10th time this month.”
However, no injuries were reported from either side in the incident that took place around 8:00am Indian time.
“Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire by resorting to unprovoked and heavy firing on Indian forward posts along LoC in Balnoie sub-sector of Poonch district,” Indian defence spokesperson Manish Mehta was quoted in the Press Trust of India (PTI).
Local influential daily Dawn quoted the Pakistant Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) that its military “responded effectively to unprovoked firing by the Indians” near Koti.
Pakistan claimed that India fired in the Poonch sector along the LoC with mortar shells and other heavy weapons which had been strongly responded.
PTI reports that this was the tentch ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir since October 1.
There were over 100 violations in recent months. The Himalayan territory of Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored de facto border of LoC bus is claimed full by both countries.
