A robbery was committed at Radhagovinda Mandir in Nandakanai area under Patuakhali municipality early yesterday.
Police quoted Amrita Bala, the priest of the temple, as saying that a gang of 4 to 5 unidentified criminals entered the temple forcibly and confined the priest to an adjacent room early yesterday.
The gang took away six idols of Hindu goddess, including five made of silver and some gold ornaments worth couple of lakhs.
As the priest raised a hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot and rescued him and informed police.
Ziaul Haque, officer in-charge of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station, said they have visited the temple and are trying their best to arrest the culprits and recover the looted idols and other ornaments.
