Homage to Rashid Choudhury
On the occasion of the 82nd birth anniversary of legendary Bangladeshi tapestry artist Rashid Choudhury, Bingshoti, an artists' organisation has organised a four-day special painting exhibition. The exhibition was inaugurated on March 28 at Dhaka art Centre in Dhanmondi. Professor emeritus Anisuzzaman was present as chief guest while artist Abul Barq Alvi, dean, the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka was present as special guest at the inauguration. Mukarram Hossain Hiron, curator of the exhibition delivered the welcome speech at the programme. The participating artists have used oil, acrylic and watercolour.
About 100 artworks by 21 artists -- including Mukarram Hossain Hiron, Ahmed Nawaz, Rafique Siddiqui, Shishir Mallik, Afroza Khondokar, Bijan Majumdar, Khurshida Reza, Shafayat Khan, Shah Moinul Islam, Uttam Sen, Debabrata Mallik, Farzana Yasmin, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Shekhar Mondol -- are put on display at the exhibition. The artworks can be categorised in varied mode of expressions like realistic, semi-realistic, figurative, pure-abstraction and neo-expressionism. A number of artists have focused on nature and its innermost aspects, forms of diverse flora and fauna, women in tranquil setting, pure form and composition, and more. In their artworks, the artists have used azure, white, black, crimson, green and brown, among other colours. Most of the artists are deeply inspired by varied organic forms, like vegetation, flowers and plants. A number of artists have made a great attempt to present synchronisation of colours in their works.
Rashid was the pioneer of tapestry in this country and definitely the finest artist of this particular genre to date. He successfully introduced tapestry in various forms. Blending of our tradition with modern western art is the main characteristics of his works.
About the iconic artist, architect and art critic Shamsul Wares said, “His specialty was to search for novel themes and present them with a fresh approach. The artist established his individuality — particularly in terms of design and colour composition. The thickness of colours, geometric compositions and aestheticism make a distinction in his works.”
