Tobacco users to believe lung cancer warnings on packs
A powerful national mass media campaign to show the deadly harm of tobacco - and support the warning labels now on tobacco packs in Bangladesh — was launched recently by Mr. Zahid Maleque MP, the State Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh. The mass media campaign, "Live Long, Don't Smoke" was produced with technical support from Vital Strategies (formerly World Lung Foundation), according to a press release.
This new campaign to run on all major national TV channels in Bangladesh aims to encourage smokers to quit and discourage youth from starting to use tobacco, by showing the real health harms of tobacco use.
According to The Tobacco Atlas, tobacco is the cause of 14.6% of adult male deaths and 5.7% of adult female deaths in Bangladesh — more than the average in other low-income countries. Tobacco-related disease including stroke kills almost 100,000 Bangladeshis every year, while another 382,000 suffer from chronic illnesses caused by tobacco.
