HC extends stay on Mahbub’s remand
The High Court today extended for next two months its earlier order that stayed a lower court granting remand of BNP chairperson’s Adviser Khandker Mahbub Hossain in an attempted murder case.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Mahbub, also vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, seeking extension of its earlier order.
The same bench on January 9 stayed the lower court order that granted remand of Mahbub for seven days, and also issued a rule upon the government to explain as to why the lower court order should not be cancelled.
On January 8, a Dhaka court permitted police to show Mahbub arrested and granted a two-day remand in the case.
Shah Mujahidul Islam, sub-inspector of Ramna Police Station, filed the case on January 5, a day after miscreants hurled several crude bombs at the New Circular Road office of Maruf Hossain Sardar, a deputy commissioner, Ramna division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
On January 7, police picked up Mahbub near the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Defence lawyer M Masud Rana told The Daily Star that police cannot take his client on remand for next two months following the HC order.
