Hathura looks for systemic progress
The most talked about vacancy in Bangladesh cricket was officially occupied yesterday and it began a new chapter for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Chandika Hathurasingha, during his first interaction with the media, yesterday seemed to have a 'no-nonsense' outlook and appeared to have a clear map of progress in mind.
There was not much that Hathurasingha could have said yesterday, it was after all his first day at work. Yet his statements seemed to prove that he knew how to run his own show.
As the Sri Lankan put it, his main focus would be to gather as much support from the board and create the best system possible, a task which a number of his predecessors faced problems with.
“My job is to create a good environment and get everyone in the office to perform to the best of their ability and make sure that the team gets the best support. My experience from the last few years in Sri Lanka and Australia tells me that the best system in place does well most of the time,” said Hathurasingha.
“I spoke to the board and they are prepared to give me all the support. I think the current board is prepared to make a change and as a result I am here. We are on the right track,” he added.
Despite Bangladesh's tough ask in the 50-over World Cup next year, Hathurasingha hopes to go to the second round.
“If we prepare smartly enough to adjust to the conditions (Australia and New Zealand) we will go far. I'll be happy if we can go to the second round. That's the first goal,” he said.
When reminded about the fact that he just has eight months to achieve that huge task, the 45-year-old shot back a pragmatic reply.
“What can I do now? I can't buy time. I am not a person who looks back on what I don't have. We have eight months. We will try to do the maximum of what we can,” he said.
Acknowledging Bangladesh's huge cricket fan base, the new head coach has asked followers to be patient. At the end of his two-year contract he hopes to make a team that, according to him, will be getting into its 'peak' as a unit and one that can get into good positions to win matches both home and away.
