Govt gets 1 more month to stop publishing English ads
The High Court today asked the information secretary to take measures to stop in a month publishing advertisements of electronic and print media in English language unless there is any unavoidable reason.
The court has also ordered the home secretary to use Bangla language in nameplates and number plates of police vehicles and other signboards under the ministry in 30 days instead of English.
While hearing a writ petition, the HC directed both the home and information secretaries to submit a report before it by July 1 after complying with its orders.
On February 17, the court directed the government to take necessary steps to ensure in one month the use of Bangla in all advertisements of electronic media and on vehicles' registration plates, signboards and billboards across the country.
The HC bench of Justice Quzi-Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain today fixed July 1 for further hearing on the petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond on February 17.
In the petition, he prayed to the court to direct the government to take initiatives to ensure Bangla language in all the sectors.
Bangla is not being used in all the signboards, billboards, nameplates of all the vehicles and advertisements published in the electronic and English media across the country, he said in the petition.
As per Bangla Bhasha Procholon Ain (Bangla Language Introduction Law), 1987, Bangla is mandatory in all sectors, including offices and courts.
