At least 100 cloth shops and factories were gutted as a devastating fire swept through a tin-shed market in Narayanganj city early today.
Five people also sustained minor injuries when they tried to douse the fire, report our Narayanganj correspondent.
Staring around 4:00am, the fire soon engulfed the entire Shuhrawardi Market burning down over 100 shops and factories, said Momtaz Hossain, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Four firefighting units from Dhaka and Narayanganj stations rushed to the spot and put out the flame after two and a half hours of frantic efforts, the fire service official said.
The fire might have been originated from an electric short circuit, he added.
The extent of loss caused by the fire may go up to several crores of taka, the victims claimed.
