Feni AL man held in Khagrachhari
Police early today arrested Belal Hossain Patwari, a union-level Awami League leader of Feni, for his alleged link with the killing of Phulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haq.
Belal, AL general secretary of Anandapur union in Phulgazi of Feni and a close aide to Ekram, was arrested in Barnal village of Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari around 3:00am, report our correspondents from Feni and Khagrachhari.
The law enforcers also detained one Abul Bashar on charges of giving shelter to Belal at his Barnal house, said Moinuddin Khan, officer-in-charge of Matiranga Police Station.
Confirming the arrest, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of Feni Md Shamsul Alam said Belal was in shelter of Bashar since Ekram was murdered on May 20.
Ekram was shot first and after that burnt alive in his car at Academy in Feni town.
Belal, also a member of Anandapur union parishad (UP) in Phulgazi, will be handed over to Feni police later, said OC Moinuddin.
A week into the murder, locals torched the house of Belal suspecting his involvement with the killing.
With Belal, the law enforcers have so far arrested 22 people from different places in connection with the gruesome murder but a number of key suspects are still at large.
Police arrested local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, the lone named accused in the murder case.
Ekram's brother Rezaul Haque filed the murder case with Feni Model Police Station against Minar and 34 unnamed people.
Two masterminds -- Abidul Islam Abid and Awami League leader Jihad Chowdhury -- were arrested on May 25 and 24.
