Ex-Rab officer Tareque admits link
Sacked commanding officer of Rab-11 Tareque Sayeed Mohammad admitted before a Narayanganj court his role in abduction and killing of panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others.
The Rab officer described the incident of abduction and killings of the seven people while making confessional statement at a Judge’s chamber (Khas Kamra) under section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
After recording his statement, Senior Judicial Magistrate KM Mohiuddin sent Tareque to jail, said Shakhawat Hossain Khan, president of Narayanganj Lawyers' Association who along with some lawyers filed a murder case in connection with the murders.
Earlier, Tareque was taken to the court around 8:30am.
He was remanded for the sixth time on Saturday since his arrest on May 17 in connection with the gruesome murders. With the fresh remand, Tareque's remand period in two cases has totalled 34 days.
Three Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members including Tareque were sent to forced retirement on May 6 after their alleged involvement with the abduction and killing of the seven people came to light.
The other two former Rab officials Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana made confessional statements before a Narayanganj court under the section 164 on June 4 and 5 respectively.
Arif were arrested along with Tareque on May 17 under section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure at Dhaka cantonment while Rana arrested the following day from the same area.
Tareque and Arif were charged with the murders on May 22 while Rana on May 25.
On April 27, Nazrul, his three aides and driver and senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and his driver were kidnapped from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road in Narayanganj separately.
Three days later, six bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya. The other body was recovered from the river the following day.
Of the two cases filed in connection with the killings, one was filed by Nazrul's wife Selina Yasmin and the other case by Chandan Sarkar’s colleagues.
The allegations of the trio’s involvement into the abduction and killings came into light when Nazrul's father-in-law claimed before media that Rab men committed the crime in exchange for Tk 6 crore from Hossain and other accused.
Nur Hossain, former vice-president of Sidhhirganj thana Awami League unit of the city, has been made the prime accused in the case filed by the Nazrul’s wife.
He was arrested by Kolkata police Saturday night and was placed on an eight-day remand on charge of infiltrating India, gambling and possessing firearms.
