Ex-Rab officer Arif makes confessional statement
Former Rab officer Major Arif Hossain, arrested for his alleged involvement in the abduction and murder of Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others, made confessional statement before a court today.
Arrested after he was pulled back, Arif gave the statement before the Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate in Narayanganj M Mohiuddin under Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Khandakar Mahid Uddin told The Daily Star.
Asked whether his involvement in the murder is established, the SP said, "Since Arif made confessional statement, it is something like that."
He declined to comment further.
Major (retd) Arif Hossain was charged with the seven-murder murder on May 22, five days after his arrest in connection with the case filed by Nazrul’s wife Selina Yasmin.
Arif and two other former Rab officials -- Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana -- were sent on forced retirements on May 6 for their alleged involvement in the gruesome abduction and killing of the seven people whose bodies were later found in the Shitalakkha River.
On April 27, Nazrul and his three aides -- Tajul, Liton, and Swapan -- and Nazrul's driver Jahangir and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver Ibrahim were kidnapped separately.
