PM's call for peace and security
We fully endorse the call by Prime Minister Hasina at the Asian-African Summit which concluded in Indonesia on Thursday to elevate the level of cooperation between the Afro-Asian countries. The potential and prospects and indeed the challenges that face these countries of the region that is also known as the global South bear strong rationale for the countries to involve more intensively in addressing the challenges.
Any effort to provide a peaceful milieu for developmental programmes will continue to be stymied by the wrath of extremism / terrorism, climate change and human trafficking. And Bangladesh is perhaps one of those countries that are at the receiving end of the adverse impacts of all the three phenomena. Not only do these problems straddle borders and have ramifications across countries but go beyond the region also. It does not need convincing that not one of these can be adequately combated without a coherent and rational strategy participated by all the member countries.
Over the last several decades Bangladesh has been a leading exponent of the South-South cooperation and has played a front ranking role in enhancing cooperation between countries that are apparently less endowed individually but can with their collective efforts achieve the developments goals. And we would hope that the call by our prime minister to address the three very pressing issues would not only be endorsed by the other member countries but a substantive action plan would be devised to meet the challenges.
