PM's call to fight terrorism
PM'S call at the BIMSTEC summit to fight terrorism reflects the reality that the phenomenon, being multidimensional, is straddling international borders. As it is fed and motivated from various sources, extremism cannot be effectively controlled single-handedly by any one country, rather the onus is on us to make concerted global and regional efforts to identify and diffuse terrorist threats and attend to the multifaceted causes that drive people towards carrying out such destructive acts. Thus, her call should resonate in the minds of all who wish to see this phenomenon effectively contained.
As a region that is plagued with the twin obstacles of poverty and overpopulation, terrorism poses a great hurdle before sustained economic growth. Having said that, in order to combat terrorism, the BIMSTEC member nations must come together to identify the reasons that germinate extremist ideologies across the border, target its very roots, and confront the source of its sustenance, which is both ideological and monetary in nature.
We believe that it is necessary to draft counter-terrorism policies and strategies in line with countries that have successfully dealt with similar threats, and develop resources to take effected steps to counter terrorism. There is no denying that it is crucial to cut across countries and nations, political borders and beliefs to combat this menace that has spread its tentacles beyond the confines of nation states and their boundaries. Intervention at the grassroots level to counter extremist ideologies is also the key.
