Dhaka to host Global Forum on Migration, Development in 2016
Dhaka for the first time is going to host the 9th Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) in 2016.
During a meeting held in Geneva yesterday, the Steering Group of the GFMD unanimously accepted Bangladesh's bid to chair the GFMD in 2016. Troika Meeting of GFMD also appreciated the decision.
The GFMD is an initiative of the United Nations member states, which started in 2007, bringing about international dialogue on the growing importance of the linkages between migration and development.
This election reaffirms Bangladesh's leading role in incorporating the migration issue in the post 2015 development agenda, said a foreign ministry press release yesterday.
As a chair, Bangladesh will get the opportunity to effectively pursue and further promote the rights and well-beings of the migrant workers and their families in the global migration discourse where representatives of 150 countries will participate.
Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque led the Bangladesh delegation at the meeting while HEM Shameem Ahsan, permanent representative of Bangladesh to the UN in Geneva also participated.
