Dhaka-Tangail highway in gridlock
Home-goers are suffering in a 65-kilometre tailback stretching from Chandra of Gazipur to Bangabandhu bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail highway today.
The tailback pursued from an accident, a head-on collision between a truck and a bus, on the highway in Gharinda area of Tangail Sadar around 5:30am, said Saleh Mohammad Tanvir, superintendent of police (SP) in Tangail.
However, no casualties were reported, our Tangail correspondent said quoting the official.
The accident caused a huge tailback stretching from Chandra area of Gazipur to the eastern side of the Bangabandhu bridge, the SP said.
Holidaymakers were seen in profound distress stranded in the tailback where several thousand of vehicles were seen in queue for the rush to reach home ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The tailback was being eased slightly despite heavy pressure of traffic on the highway around 3:45pm, said Jubaidul Alam, officer-in-charge of Gorai Highway Police Station.
TWO KM GRIDLOCK AT MAWA
The tailback at Mawa ferry terminal, that connects 21 southern districts through the waterway, stretched to about two kilometres, our Munshiganj correspondent reports.
Some 300 buses, cars and other vehicles were seen queuing at the Mawa terminal this morning.
All of the 17 ferries were in operation, but the load was overwhelming, said Sirajul Haque, manager of Mawa terminal Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).
Biplab Bijoy Talukdar, SP in Munshiganj, said they took specific measures to ensure smooth passage of home-goers.
“Buses and cars were being transported in priority. More than 400 policemen, both in uniform and plainclothes, were deployed to ensure security and prevent extortion and high fares.”
