Detained Rab man attempts suicide
A Rab member, arrested in connection with the sensational seven-murder case in Narayanganj, allegedly attempted suicide inside the district jail on Friday night.
Lance Nayek Belal Hossain was found with injury marks on his throat and abdomen, caused by a sharp object, around 11:30pm, sources said.
The jail authority rushed him to the Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital in a critical condition and later shifted him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Physician Asaduzzaman, resident medical officer of Victoria hospital, said Belal was carried to the hospital around midnight.
“He cut his throat and abdomen with a one-time razor blade,” the doctor quoted Belal as saying.
Although reasons behind Belal's suicide attempt were unclear, a hospital staff wishing anonymity said he was requesting doctors to let him die.
"Don't try to save me. I am a killer. I want to die," the worker quoted Belal as saying.
Mohammad Zakaria, additional superintendent of police in Narayanganj, said Belal was out of danger now.
Belal was arrested along with four other Rab men by Narayanganj police on August 27. All of them had been taken on an eight-day remand following their arrests.
The other four are Lance Nayek Hira Miah, constable Emdadul Haque, sepoy Abu Tayab and radio operator Arif Hossain.
Sources at the Rab headquarters claimed it handed the five over to police after Rab-11 had found their involvement in the seven murders in a “shadow investigation”.
The five told the court that they had been forced to get involved in the abductions and killings by their superior officers -- Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana -- who had been arrested earlier, court sources said.
The Rab men also confessed to their involvement in the killings before a Narayanganj court.
Another Rab man held
Meanwhile, another member of Rab was detained in Dhaka in connection with the seven-murder case on Friday. A Narayanganj court yesterday placed him on an eight-day remand.
A Rab team arrested Purnendu Bala, also a sub-inspector, in the capital around 1:25pm on Friday and handed him over to the Detective Branch of police in Narayanganj, said Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of the legal and media wing of Rab.
"Bala did not join his work after the gruesome killings. We found him yesterday and detained him," he said.
However, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Khandaker Mahid Uddin claimed that detectives detained Bala Friday morning.
With Bala and Belal, 10 Rab members have been held so far in connection with the gruesome killings.
Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his driver and three associates, and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver were abducted separately on April 27 from Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road. Their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya a few days later.
Rab men's involvement in the killings came to light when Nazrul's father-in-law Shahidul Islam alleged that some Rab personnel had abducted and killed Nazrul in exchange for Tk 6 crore from ward councillor Nur Hossain and his aides.
