Demonstrations bring BRUR to halt
All academic and administrative activities came to a halt at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) yesterday as teachers, students and staff staged different protest programmes on the campus pressing for separate demands.
Students of the university under the banner “Pragatishil Chhatra Jote” brought out a procession around 11:00am demanding immediate launch of post graduation courses in all subjects, and inauguration of the newly constructed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.
Later, they put the administration building under lock and key and staged a sit-in before it.
Meanwhile, students of electronics and telecommunication engineering department staged separate programmes demanding the authorities set up a computer laboratory for them.
A section of teachers continued their demonstration, which they began on November 1, demanding that they be promoted from assistant professors to associate professors, and from associate professors to professors. The teachers also staged a sit-in before the administration building.
Meanwhile, 152 temporary officers and employees who were illegally appointed during the tenure of the former vice chancellor Abdul Jalil Miah demonstrated demanding regularisation of their jobs.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AKM Nurun Nabi said the teachers instigated the demonstrations, and that promotion was a long process. The VC added that it was overwhelming for them to deal with so many issues at once.
