Defamation suit against shipping minister scrapped
A defamation suit was filed against Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan at a Dhaka court today for alleged derogatory remarks against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.
However, the court dismissed the complaint hours afterwards.
A leader of pro-BNP lawyers’ group Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, Shamim Kabir, filed the case over “unwanted and unacceptable” comments against the BNP leader.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Maruf Hossain dismissed the case and did not take the charge into cognizance after hearing the arguments.
On December 15 in London, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman pulled reference from the past and dubbed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a “big Razakar” for banning the Awami League in the past.
In response, Minister Shahjahan Khan, at a programme in Madaripur, opined Tarique as a “mad, characterless man and a black sheep of the country.”
It was against this remark of the minister that the pro-BNP lawyer filed the lawsuit.
