DARE TO DENIM
Fashion is always evolving, changing, returning. The hairstyles and outfits we sport today are not completely new inventions by some faraway fashion research lab. In fact, the current fashion trends are adaptations of the 1950s styles, while in the 2000s it was all about the 1970s. But whatever fads may come and go, everybody knows there's one piece of clothing that one cannot absolutely live without: that perfect pair of jeans. Be it the travelling pants sisterhood or that “blue jeans, white shirt” song, the tributes to denim are wide and well-deserved.
Call us purists, but the onslaught of leggings, dividers and jeans' wicked stepsister, “jeggings”, makes us quite miss the humble pair of blue denim in all its glory. While we're too busy wearing leggings with every top we own (no one, and we mean no one, looks good in a crop top and leggings; not even you!), we are seriously missing out on all the latest denim trends. Read on to get inspired!
High-waisted jeans
Those cropped tops and chiffon, flowy shirts are trending for a reason. The high waist is back in action, to complement tops in short lengths and for chiffon shirts to be tucked into. When buying a pair of high-waisted jeans, the fit is extremely important. Sometimes high-waisted jeans might be uncomfortable, so make sure your pair is in a soft, stretchy fabric to accommodate. For an extra kick, get high-waisted bell bottom jeans to rock that vintage Charlie's Angel look.
Patterned denim
Coloured denim had its glory days, but now it's all about patterned jeans. Be it floral, striped or tone-on-tone subtle prints, a pair of patterned jeans don't require much else. A simple t-shirt in a neutral colour is the perfect companion to patterned jeans for a laid back look.
Boyfriend jeans
The term “boyfriend” jeans sounds a bit redundant now, as the boyfriends are also wearing jeans as skinny-legged as their respective girlfriends, but once upon a time a pair of old, washed-up, ripped and loose pair of jeans was considered manly. While the manly men are long gone, the concept still remains and the boyfriend jeans are an excellent weekend, or “I just pulled on whatever I had but look great” kind of look. Pair boyfriend jeans with a fitting top for balance and a high ponytail and minimal makeup. A belt is a must.
Shiny denim
Some of the jeans out there have a glazed, leather-y look. This comes from a coating of wax to give the appearance of leather but guarantee the comfort of jeans. Perfect for that “rock n' roll” look, a pair of glazed jeans is all you need if you want to glam up your night. A loose white T-shirt and some silver accessories can do you no wrong.
Classy jeans
Although skinny jeans are great for dressing up or down, sometimes we all want something more; in some cases, something classier. For a more uptown, sophisticated but still fairly casual look, pick a pair of tailored, slim fit jeans that are ankle length. Add a well-fitting jacket and a pair of black pumps and you are ready to roll.
Denim shirts
Yes, we know we were talking about pants, but who can ignore the current trend of denim shirts everywhere? A loose, unassuming denim shirt that looks like it's borrowed from the boys is perfect for adding a little something special to those classic looks. Wearing a long t-shirt and leggings? Stick out from the crowd by throwing on a denim shirt and floral scarf.
So the real question is, can you ever go wrong with denim? The answer is, of course, never. But when it comes to a pair of jeans, the most important factor is the fit. If it doesn't fit perfectly, don't buy it. After all, the true essence of a pair of jeans was that it was a clothing item so comfortable that one could just wake up, slip it on, and be presentable to the world. That's the message we want denim to carry forward in the years to come, and it looks like denim will stay strong for quite a while.
