Criminals sever AL leader's leg
A group of unidentified criminals severed a leg of a local Awami League leader of Mirzaganj upazila in Patuakhali calling him out of his home early yesterday.
Abdul Halim Mollah, 42, general secretary of Awami League's Madhabkhali unit and a member of the union parishad, lost his right leg from the knee down and is undergoing treatment at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Shewly Begum, wife of the victim, said an unidentified group of people called Halim outside the house around 2:00am yesterday and “we heard him scream after a while”.
Shewly said her husband was busy with the preparation of their daughter's wedding for today. But he did have a feud with Awami League leader Abdul Latif Mollah over the presidentship of Dorgabari Govt Primary School Managing Committee, she added.
Azimul Haque, additional superintendent of police in Patuakhali, visited the spot yesterday morning and assured people of taking legal action against the culprits.
However, Officer-in-Charge Md Habibur Rahman of Mirzaganj Police Station said no case had been filed with the police till 9:00pm.
Meanwhile, protesting the attack, Gazi Atahar Uddin, Mirzaganj upazila Awami League Vice-President called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the upazila today.
