Youth held for arson attack on Gaibandha Santals
Lawmen have arrested a youth in connection with a case filed for attacking and looting Santals village in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha on November 6, 2016.
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Ruhul Amin, 33, a labour leader of Rangpur Sugar Mill, last night from Madarpur village, said Akhter Hossain Mia, additional superintendent of police in Gaibandha.
Ruhul was actively involved in arson and looting of Santal family sheds at Shahebganj cane farm last year, the police official told our Gaibandha correspondent.
On November 6, 2016, police fired and lobbed teargas shells during an eviction drive at the Shahebganj sugarcane farm leaving two Santals killed and several others injured. Protesting the eviction, Santals at the time shot arrows at police and mill labourer injuring 25 people, including policemen.
Ten days after the attack, the evicted Santals filed a case against 500 unnamed people for attacking their village, setting fire and looting their homes.
In the primary interrogation, Ruhul confessed his involvement in the attack, the police official further said.
