Yearly drug case 16 times up

In the last 10 years, filing of drug case has increased 16 times in the district.

In 2008, 31 people were sued in drug case while the number was 498 in 2017, according to a statistics of the office of Superintendent of Police (SP) in Pirojpur.

The number was below 50 till 2012 except 2010. But it crossed 100 in 2013 and continued increasing every year. The number of drug cases stood at 201 till April this year.

Even during the anti-drug drive that started on May 15 this year, there is no let up in the situation.

There are around 100 people accused in drug case in Pirojpur jail. One fourth of the jail inmates are accused in drug cases, said Md Shameem Iqbal, superintendent of the Jail.

SP Md Salam Kabir said, "During the drive, we arrested over 100 drug dealers and recovered huge amount of drugs. Two drug dealers were killed in gunfight with the law enforcers."

There are over 150 listed drug dealers in seven upazilas of the district, according to Department of Narcotics Control in Pirojpur.
