Woman takes own life to escape torture

A housewife committed suicide, failing to bear with the brutal torture by her husband and in-laws for dowry in Joypurhat's Kalai upazila on Tuesday.

The deceased, Aduri Begum, 21, was wife of Khairul Islam of Mastor village in the upazila.

Quoting villagers, police said Khairul's father Abul Khaleque used to torture Aduri mentally while Khairul often beat her for dowry since their marriage.

On Tuesday, Khaleque scolded Aduri and then Khairul beat her, again  demanding dowry.

At one stage, Aduri went to her room and took pesticide.

Villagers rescued her and took her to Kalai Upazila Health Complex. She died at the hospital in the evening.

The deceased's relatives filed a murder case with Kalai Police Station yesterday, Officer-in-Charge Nuruzzaman Chowdhury of the police station said.
