A woman is groaning with pain at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital as her husband and in-laws beat her mercilessly with bamboo sticks on Thursday night for refusing to give more money as dowry.

Victim Anjuara Begum, 31, said her husband Abdus Sattar, 40, asked her to bring Tk 50,000 from her father. As she refused, they beat her mercilessly with bamboo sticks, leaving her seriously injured.

Hearing of the matter, Anjuara's relatives went to her in-laws' house and took her to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

Anjuara, daughter of Anwar Hossain of Fakirpara in the municipality, told this correspondent that she was married to Abdus Sattar, 40, son of Jabbar Ali of Akhanagar Hazipara village in Sadar upazila, in October last year. During marriage, her family also gave Tk 1.5 lakh as dowry as per prior agreement.

After the marriage, Anjuara's in-laws, including her husband, demanded more money from her family.

Medical Officer Suvendu Kumar Devnath said her right hand is badly fractured and there are many injury marks on her body.

Officer-in-Charge of Ruhea Police Station Prodip Kumar Roy said they are yet to receive a complaint in this matter. “We will take steps in this connection after a complaint is filed,” he added.
