Will look into need for rehabilitation law: Minister
Law Minister Anisul Huq today said the government will examine the necessity of formulating a specific law to rehabilitate people languishing in custody for long periods due to delay in trial.
“The government has no plan at this moment to formulate a law for rehabilitating people who get released from custody after languishing in jail for long time. But we will look into the need for formulating such a law,” he said.
The minister made the comment while talking to The Daily Star in response to a comment made by the Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee Chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim about the rehabilitation of such people.
The High Court has so far granted bail to 18 people who have been languishing in jail by for more than 10 years and issued directives for the 40 others after the Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee has placed their issues before this court.
The SCLAC is working on the issues of 404 others who are languishing in jails from 5 to 10 years, SCLAC sources said.
On April 18, SCLAC Chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim underscored the need for specific law to rehabilitate people languishing in custody for long periods due to delay in trial proceedings.
Justice Enayetur Rahim, also a judge of the High Court Division of the SC, said a specialised centre might be established for rehabilitating ones who get released from jail after long periods.
