Voting partially suspended in Bogra
Voting for the chairman and member posts in Bogra district was suspended as the country went on zila parishad elections today.
Meanwhile, the authorities also halted elections at two centres of Kurigram following HC order.
Bogra
The Election Commission took the decision to suspend election for the posts of a chairman and three members as a High Court decision on cancellation of candidatures is pending.
As per the notice from the EC secretariat, the elections in the four posts were suspended, our Bogra correspondent reports quoting Yunuch Ali, election officer.
The notice was issued on December 27, 2016, signed by Farhad Ahamad Khan, deputy secretary of election conduction-02 of the EC secretariat, the official said.
However, the elections in the other posts were held as usual, the election officer said.
The HC fixed January 5, 2017, to deliver a decision on an appeal lodged by the EC on December 27 on cancellation of the candidatures of chairman hopeful ATM Aminul Islam and the three member aspirants of ward No. 6, 12 and 14 respectively -- Anowar Hossain of Nandigram, Fazlul Bari Nayan of Gabtoli and Aminur Rahman of Dupchanchia -- the official added quoting the notice.
The EC canceled their candidatures over imbalance on tax report submitted to the commission, added the district election commission.
The 47 candidates against 12 ward member posts and 14 candidates against five female reserved member posts have been fighting in the polls in Bogra district, he added.
Visiting the polling centre in ward No. 1 in Sadar upazila, the correspondent found presence of few voters.
Kurigram
Voting is suspended at two polling centres in Kurigram district following separate HC order.
Md Nurul Amin, returning officer and also the deputy commissioner of the district, last night suspended voting at Phulbari Girls’ High School polling centre under ward No. 6 of Phubari upazila following the order, our Kurigram correspondent reports quoting Delwar Hosssain, district election officer, this morning.
The HC order came following a prayer for including names of 12 people and the chairman in the voter list in Bhangmore union in the upazila, the official added.
The HC order also suspended voting for the member posts at Rawmari Model Government Primary School polling centre under ward No. 14 in Rawmari upazila as Jahidul Islam Minu, a member candidate in Rawmari, filed a case with the HC challenging Election Commission’s decision for cancellation of his nomination, the election officer said.
The voting for the chairman and reserved seats for women members is going on at Rawmari polling centre, he said.
